Maths tuition, tailored for your child.
One-to-one tutoring for children across Moray for National 5 Maths, National 5 Applications of Maths, Higher Maths, and Advanced Higher Maths.
One tutor. One child. Your lesson.
Every lesson starts with the child in front of me, not a lesson plan written for thirty.
-
Your pace
Need longer on fractions? Let's take it slow. Already grasped it? We move on — at your pace. You're not waiting on anyone, and nobody gets left behind.
-
Your questions
Ask as many as you like, as often as you like. There's no one else to worry about.
-
Your way
Some children learn by drawing, some by talking, some by practising. As your tutor, I find what works for you and use it.
-
Exam ready
Past-paper practice, mark-scheme know-how and calm confidence on the day.
Why one-to-one beats a class of 30
Teachers do brilliant work, but no teacher can slow down for one child while 29 others wait. A tutor can.
| Topic | In a class of 30 | With your tutor |
|---|---|---|
| Attention | A few minutes per child, at best. | Every minute is for one child. |
| Pace | The lesson moves on when most of the class is ready. | We move on when you're ready, or stay until it makes sense. |
| Questions | Easy to stay quiet while other hands go up. | Ask anything. No one else is listening. |
| Gaps | Missed topics can pile up unnoticed. | I spot the gap and fix it at the root. |
| Confidence | Hard to try an answer in front of 29 others. | A safe place to get things wrong, which is how learning works. |

About your Moray maths tutor
Additional Tuition began with a simple belief: most children aren't "bad at" maths. They just haven't had it explained in a way that fits them yet.
I'm a qualified teacher — not just someone who's good at the subject.
- A mathematics degree from the University of Oxford
- A PGDE from the University of Aberdeen
- Registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS)
- Experience teaching in both state and private Scottish schools
That means I know how Scottish schools teach and assess, and I've seen where children tend to get stuck. Having taught in busy classrooms, I know how much gets missed when one teacher has to share their time, and how much difference one-to-one attention can make.
For students, that means someone friendly who will explain things again, and again if needed, and never makes a question feel silly. For parents, it means clear, honest feedback on how your child is really doing.
My promise is simple. I'll be patient, I'll be honest about progress, and I'll make learning feel a little lighter.
What families say
A few words from parents and students I've worked with:
[W]e just wanted to tell you [R]'s nat 5 maths result, she got a B, we would like to thank you from taking her from a fail during the prelims to a fantastic result. You gave [R] her confidence back and also broke down the questions, so [R] could understand the issues she was having, something her own maths teachers at school couldn't do, she worked so well with [R]. We are so pleased with her results.
L
I just wanted to let you know that she received her results today and achieved an A in National 5 Apps for Maths. We are both very grateful to you for all your support and tuition in enabling her to achieve this result.
N
Just to let you know that [K] passed with a C! We are beyond proud of her and cannot thank you enough for the support and teaching you gave her. If anyone is looking for a tutor I will be sure to send them your way
E & K
I just wanted to drop you a message to let you know that [he] got a B in his maths! He is absolutely delighted. Thank you so so much for all you did with him, you helped him learn the apps coursework in record time but you also built his confidence and really made him believe he could do it. I will be forever grateful.
C
[H]e got a C which we are all so chuffed with. To get that after he's really been struggling is such a fantastic achievement and in very large part down to your amazing teaching, support and enthusiasm. Thank you so much!

Questions parents ask
How do I get started?
Send me a message through the contact form and tell me about your child's needs. I'll arrange a first lesson at a time that's mutually convenient.
Do you teach in Elgin and the surrounding area?
Yes. I'm a maths tutor based in Moray, covering Elgin, Forres, Fochabers, Keith, Buckie and Lossiemouth. Lessons take place in comfortable surroundings in central Elgin.
How is this different from school?
School teaches a class of around 30 at one pace. I teach one child at a time, so I can slow down, speed up and revisit anything. I work alongside school, not instead of it.
Will you follow what my child's school is teaching?
Yes. I follow the QS (SQA) curriculum for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Maths, and plan lessons around what your child's school is covering and their upcoming exams. See the QS (SQA) website for full course details.
My child is shy, or has lost confidence. Will this help?
That's who I often work best with. One-to-one means no audience and no pressure. I start with what your child can already do and build from there.
How often should my child have lessons?
Most families start with one lesson a week. I'll suggest more before QS (SQA) exams, or less once your child is flying.
Where do lessons take place?
Lessons take place in comfortable surroundings in central Elgin. It's easy to reach from Forres, Fochabers, Keith, Buckie and Lossiemouth, with parking nearby.
Are you background checked?
Yes. I hold a PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) check, along with relevant qualifications and references. My registration with the GTCS is current.
